MERRO: Speaking the Language of Love

Editor's Note

When friends and colleagues are asked to describe Merro, the common theme is her heart for God and people. Words like determined, compas-sionate, and humble are usually followed by “she is amazing”. Merro leads the team at Worldbridge with the goals of evangelism and discipleship.

MERRO AND TARI AT AN ENGLISH WORKSHOP

Worldbridge Language Center (WBLC) is a school that focuses on teaching the English and Indonesian language. Formed in 2005 in the town of Malang, East Java, Indonesia, WBLC is the brainchild of Pam Isenhower and Merro.

Due to the personal health needs of her aging mother, Pam returned to America in 2014. The centre is currently led by Merro and her team of staff and teachers.

The language school’s vision is to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ through language teaching, educating, and empowering the communities they serve. Their mission is to become the bridge that shares God’s love by building relationships with students and their parents. The school strives to provide a safe and loving environment to enable staff the ability to mature in their relationship with Christ, grow in life, and develop their gifts and skills.

In 2010, WBLC was blessed with the opportunity to move into a new permanent building, with ample space and amenities. This helped further develop the team and the school.

A Christ-Centred Ministry

We strongly believe that a godly and Christ-centred team is key for us to serve well alongside each other and share God’s love with both students and their parents. To strengthen our walk with Christ, we have daily devotions before commencing work in the morning. We also have regular Bible studies in pairs to hold each other accountable and support one another in our faith journey.

Being in a Muslim country, special programs are offered during the major holidays such as Easter, Christmas, and the summer holidays, to provide further settings to share the Gospel in discrete ways. Every two years we also host an English camp with the help of teams from overseas. These programs allow the teams to learn about different ministries and it also enables them to increase networking opportunities to share the Gospel.

Currently, we are in a transitional phase with one teacher studying at GLO in Australia during 2024 and another moving to a different city. To minimise the impact on the students and their parents we are training new teachers to take over the classes; most of our students study long-term enabling them to form deep connections with their teachers.

I have also been involved in the church-planting ministry in the villages for a few years. My main role is to disciple the women, with the core focus on discipling mature female believers from different churches. We meet once a month in the training centre in Blitar. Many of the ladies are now involved in leading and serving in the ladies’ fellowship in their own churches and one lady I have been discipling is now helping the school as an all-rounder. It is my great joy seeing where these ladies are today, as it has been my passion to help women grow to be disciples for God. The Lord has been gracious in providing a perfect platform to minister to the community through the Worldbridge Language Center.

Tari

Tari

A Diamond in the Dust

“A joy to witness how God shines and uses her to honour Him in and through her life.”

Tari graduated from CrossConnect in 2018 and has since been teaching English and Indonesian at WBLC.

Recently, she obtained her bachelor’s degree and graduated as the top student in her major. This is such a great achievement, providing positive testimony for many young people in her village and her unbelieving family. In addition to teaching, she is undergoing training for a new role at the school. This involves overseeing and working alongside the secretary to arrange students’ schedules and liaise with parents. She also mentors and disciples new teachers.

After the pandemic, we started an English Club for young people in Blitar. This club has provided us with an opportunity to build new relationships with many young unbelievers. Tari has graciously taken on a leadership role in this ministry, applying what she learned in CrossConnect. Additionally, she is planning to start a Bible study with a few young girls from Blitar. This marks an exciting new season for her as she takes on more responsibilities.

Litha

Litha

The quiet and timid, yet bold and determined

We met Litha through one of the summer events we hosted. At the time, she was a fresh graduate and looking for a job. Despite knowing she had no English teaching background, WBLC offered her a job as her demeanour attracted us.

Litha is a quiet and introverted person whose teachability and determination means she is always striving for excellence. With intensive mentoring, Litha has become one of our strongest teachers and has been trained as our second in charge at WBLC, demonstrating great enthusiasm in this role. Working together with the secretary, Litha assists in making decisions, freeing me up to focus on other work.

Litha is now on a GLO scholarship program to complete the 2024 CrossConnect course in Australia to help further her training. Her goal is to train and mentor other young adults upon her return. Litha will be a valuable asset and play an important role in the future growth of the Worldbridge Language Center.
